As a young reader when you read a book, you should find words that you are unfamiliar with and do not understand. In The Secret Society of Dragons - Parable of the Petty Thief, you have that challenge. This is both a fantasy chapter book and a textbook. Ninety-four tough vocabulary words are italicized throughout the story. In the back of the book, there is a glossary of those words; it provides pronunciation and a simple definition.Sylvia is caught somewhere between a child and a young girl desperately trying to reach adolescence. She is struggling to grow up but is saddled with being very spoiled, extremely lazy, and a chronic shoplifter. A young boy Ben tries to help her; however, he is awkward around girls and very shy. Durwood, a dwarf dragon from a secret Colony in North Carolina befriends them both in his quest to learn and understand humans. He has the unique ability to speak “human". A special bond slowly forms in this adventure to both educate Durwood and in trying to straighten out poor Sylvia.
The Secret Society befriends Gloria the victim of verbal and physical abuse by a pack of bullies lead by the School Bully. Poor Gloria is tall, very thin, and saddled with bright red hair and a ton of freckles, an easy target. After a series of mean pranks on Gloria, the Secret Society takes on the bully and his followers. In the story, typical bullies and their tactics are portrayed, discussed and explained to the reader. Some conventional and unconventional means are employed by the Secret Society to deal with the bullies.
Skyler discovers a hidden green backpack in the town nature park preserve. Against good counsel from Durwood, a dwarf dragon, he elects to take what is not his home. This is the beginning of many troubles for Skyler. Members of the Secret Society are drawn into helping Skyler and then they themselves face mystery, adventure and danger. New members are enlisted and a strong bond develops within the Secret Society as good is tested against evil. OUT EARLY THIS FALL – BE LOOKING FOR IT!
